Routine Screenings: Why, What & Where
Routine preventive care and recommended screenings can help identify health concerns earlier, when they may be easier to address.
NCBCH encourages North Carolinians to stay connected with a primary care provider and keep up with preventive care and recommended screenings appropriate for their age, health history and individual risk factors.
WHY Routine Screenings Matter

Regular preventive care provides an opportunity to identify potential health concerns early, discuss individual risk factors and determine which screenings and vaccinations may be appropriate.
Establishing an ongoing relationship with a primary care provider can also help individuals better manage existing health conditions and make informed decisions about their health.
Don’t wait until you’re sick to think about your health.
WHAT Should I Be Screened For?
Recommended preventive care varies based on your age, health history, family history and other individual risk factors. Routine preventive care can include screenings, vaccinations and other services intended to help prevent illness or identify health concerns earlier.
Many preventive services are covered by health insurance plans at no cost when provided by an in-network provider. Healthcare.gov maintains current information about covered preventive services for:
For all adults
For women
For children
Talk with your healthcare provider about which preventive services and screenings are appropriate for you.

WHERE Can I Get Care?

If you have health insurance, your health plan’s provider directory can help you find an in-network primary care provider in your area. Your employer’s benefits team or healthcare navigation service may also be able to help.
If you don’t have a regular healthcare provider or health insurance, community health centers and other community-based resources may offer primary and preventive care services.

Why This Matters to Employers
Preventive care and early detection can help improve health outcomes while reducing the impact of conditions that become more complex and costly when identified later. Employers can support preventive care by helping employees understand their benefits, encouraging appropriate screenings and making it easier for employees and families to access high-quality care.
About This Initiative
NCBCH originally launched its routine screening initiative following the COVID-19 pandemic to encourage North Carolinians to reconnect with routine preventive care. The initiative was developed with support from the North Carolina Medical Society and other healthcare stakeholders.
